Stepping onto the pristine blue turf for the very first time is incredibly exciting. However, if you are transitioning from tennis or pickleball, the enclosed glass court can feel a bit unfamiliar. It is entirely normal to feel a little intimidated during your first few rallies!
If you want to shorten your learning curve and look like a natural from day one, you need the right padel tips for beginners. Here are the five most common mistakes new players make on our courts, and exactly how you can avoid them—plus, be sure to read to the end to find out how you can learn these skills hands-on for completely free.

1. Hitting the Ball Way Too Hard
Most athletes step onto the court believing that raw power wins matches. Because the racket is solid and heavy, your natural instinct is to swing as hard as possible.
However, because the court is relatively small and enclosed, hitting the ball at maximum speed usually means it will rebound wildly off the back glass, setting your opponents up for an easy smash. Instead, focus entirely on placement. In this sport, consistency and control will always beat pure power.
2. Panicking Near the Glass Walls
The glass walls are the most unique and thrilling aspect of the game, yet beginners usually treat them like out-of-bounds lines. When the ball heads deep into the back of the court, new players often panic and try to swat it out of the air defensively.
The wall is actually your best friend! One of the most vital padel tips for beginners is to simply let the ball bounce off the glass. It slows the ball down, absorbs the impact, and gives you plenty of extra time to set up your return. For official guidelines on court boundaries and wall rules, you can reference the United States Padel Association (USPA) which serves as the national governing body for the sport of Padel in the USA

3. Standing in “No Man’s Land”
Court positioning is absolutely everything. A massive mistake new players make is standing right in the middle of their side of the court (often called “No Man’s Land”).
In this sport, you should either be defending safely behind the service line, or actively attacking up at the net. If you stand stuck in the middle, the ball will constantly land right at your feet, making it virtually impossible to dig out and return. 4. Playing in Complete Silence
Because the sport is exclusively played in doubles, teamwork is absolutely essential. Many new players get so focused on tracking the ball that they forget to talk to their partner during a fast-paced rally.
This lack of communication leads to both players swinging at the exact same ball, or worse, just watching the ball drop directly between them. Get into the habit of shouting simple words like “Mine!” or “Yours!” early and often.

5. Rushing the Point (And Forgetting the Lob!)
When under pressure, beginners usually try to end the point immediately with a highly risky, aggressive shot. They completely forget about the most important defensive weapon in the sport: the lob.
If you are out of position or your opponents are crowding the net, simply hit a high, deep lob over their heads. This forces them to run backward away from the net and buys you valuable seconds to reset your own positioning.
